Woodpeckers Three — including a Sapsucker!

YellowBelliedSapSucker
When I submitted my latest column for The Record, I included three cool photos of woodpeckers but did not say…"If you can only use one" because all three are neat shots and I hoped they would have enough space to use all three.

Since the newspaper had room for only one shot — they chose the Hairy Woodpecker shot taken by the Birdy 30 winner, George Greco — I thought I would post the other two here, along with George's pic.

I also love the Red-bellied shot below, taken by Bill Simpson of Hardyston.

But the most unusual shot I have seen in a long time was Izaac Brook's photo of a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker on his family's suet feeder in Newfoundland, West Milford.

I have never seen a sapsucker at a feeder — in fact, I've never seen one in my backyard. How about you?

I am also posting George Greco's Hairy Woodpecker shot than ran in the paper.

(Thanks, Izaac, Bill and George, for sharing your photos!)

  • Have NEVER seen one at a feeder. I think I’ve had it as a yeard bird twice. I did see a stunning male today at Ramapo Reservation–a good place for them! Now I have to work on one for my CF year list!

I’ve had regular YB Sapsucker at my peanut feeder for about 2-3 week. Spectacular, texture showing looks through my new scope ! Amazing color !!

Beautiful picture of that Yellow Bellied Sapsucker, the colors are wonderful. I did have one at my suet back in December of 2013, immature, exciting to see it though! Colors not all in yet, but the yellow was showing on the belly and a little bit of red starting on the head. I did get some photos, but through the window, as I did not want to scare it off.

We have had a male Yellow Bellied Sapsucker at our suet feeder for two weeks. Yesterday was the first day we have not seen him. We were able to take many pictures!
