Red-tail Update

IMG_1059On Saturday night, my wife and I drove an injured Red-tailed hawk to The Raptor Trust, thanks to all the vigilant folks on Maltbie Avenue in Midland Park.

Here is the first report we have received about the bird from TRT:

This Hawk is in our intensive care area for now because it presented with a seizure shortly after we first evaluated it.

It was also very thin, and its pupils were extremely dilated.

It is standing upright on its own and has gained back some energy, however we still want to monitor it very closely for any more signs of head trauma.

We are all relieved that the bird is in such capable hands. Thanks, Raptor Trust!

Coincidentally, I got a report from a friend who lives nearby — he reported that he had seen the Red-tail on the road, eating a dead rabbit and apparently famished.  He managed to get the hawk and its meal off the road and onto a lawn.

If the hawk was somehow hit by a car, this would explain the apparent head trauma.
