Rare Woodpecker Sighting from 1971

Img431-001This rare Yellow-tufted Woodpecker was seen and photographed near Oak Street and Brookside Avenue in Allendale on Oct. 29, 1971.

Origin of the bird unknown.

Identification confirmed at the time by Dean Amadon, Lamont curator of birds at the American Museum of Natural History.

No guarantee that it will show up again there on Oct. 29 this year.

This transparency by R.V. Jones of Orchard Street was provided by Stiles Thomas. (Thanks, Stiles!)

If anyone can make a better digital image from the transparency, please holler! We know you're out there.

Do you know of any rarer sightings for North Jersey? Let me know.
