Pranked by a Blue Jay

DSCN9904-001
Was walking around the Celery Farm near Kickypoo Corner yesterday afternoon when I heard what sounded like a Red-shouldered Hawk, just not so piercing.

As I walked back toward Barking Dog Corner, I could see and hear a Blue Jay doing a Red-shoulder call in the phrags.

I smiled and continued on my way, and was happy to see two actual Red-shoulders (no doubt Laura and her mate) fly in to see who was trying to impersonate them.

Above is a Red-shoulder shot from yesterday morning.

The Blue Jay would not pose for a photo. I don't ask for much.

I am no longer on speaking terms with it.

  • There is a pair of Red-tails in Ramsey. A Blue Jay got us looking about when it voiced a litany of Red-tail vocalizations perfectly. We finally located the culprit, with pretty much the same reaction you had!
