My New Column: The Owl Artist
Jan Jansz den Uyl, Still Life with Ham. Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art
My latest column for The Record and Herald News is something offbeat — it's about a 17th-century Dutch still life artist whose name means "owl" in old Dutch and who signed his name as a little owl cameo.
For the first time in several years, one of only three of his works that can be seen in the United States will go on display soon at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Conn.
(The other two are at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston (link to the painting is here) and the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh (link to the painting is here.)
A link to the column is here. (And a big thank you to Oliver Tostmann of the Wadsworth Atheneum for his help with the column!)
