This was a toughie, and no one answered correctly. I had to ask Conserve Wildlife Foundation's Allegra Mitchell, a reptile expert, who says:
So great that your friends were able to help this turtle out!
It is a red-eared slider. It is likely that this is a female looking for some soft dirt with decent light exposure to lay eggs – turtles typically find roadsides to be adequate locations for nests.
If they understood what cars were though they might rethink their decision! (Thanks, Allegra!)
