On my way to town on Friday, I heard an odd call unlike I'd ever heard, and figured it was a goofy squirrel or a Blue Jay. I located the caller: a Red-shouldered Hawk looking directly at me from a tree maybe 20 yards away.
I wish I had recorded the call, because I could not find anything similar online. The closest I came was a call on "All About Birds," which was described as "Female Red-shouldered Hawks sometimes give a soft kee call when on the nest." This one was not on a nest.
