Monday Morning Red-shoulder Mystery

IMG_0059
On my way to town on Friday, I heard an odd call unlike I'd ever heard, and figured it was a goofy squirrel or a Blue Jay. I located the caller: a Red-shouldered Hawk looking directly at me from a tree maybe 20 yards away.

I wish I had recorded the call, because I could not find anything similar online. The closest I came was a call on "All About Birds," which was described as "Female Red-shouldered Hawks sometimes give a soft kee call when on the nest." This one was not on a nest.

What was going on?

(I took the photo above in Allendale, but not on Friday.)
