Monday Morning Mystery 042417

1-IMG_3321This mystery is courtesy of eight-year-old Elizabeth, who walked round the Celery Farm with her grandparents and me last week.

Why is a Trout Lily called a Trout Lily? (Insert fish joke here.)

  • Trout lily leaves are mottled like a trout fish skin. They have only one leaf until it matures, then it has two. The leaves are stiff, waxy, upright, 7-20cm long.

  • Growing up we knew this as Adder’s Tongue….however this flower has several other names. It derives it’s name from the green leaves that suggest a trout…it blooms at trout fishing time…is found in moist woods and along streams.
