House Finch or Purple Finch?

1-IMG_1991-001

Maybe it's just me, but this snow-eating finch looks more like a House Finch than the Purple Finch I was hoping for. "The Crossley ID Guide" was not helpful — in part because I didn't take photos from several angles. Any thoughts?

Aside from everything Alison said, this bird has streaking, which Purple Finches don’t have. (only applicable to adult males)

  • Yes, that’s a house finch. Even from this angle you can see that the tail is long and the wingtip short, and the pattern of the wing, flank, breast, and head are all good for that species and wrong for purple finch. Beautiful photo, though I wish it were about 30 degrees warmer out….
