Getting a Head Start on Winter?

IMG_9100

When I got a glimpse of a little guy with black on its head cleaning out the bluebird box that has been used by Black-capped Chicadees, House Wrens, and House Sparrows, I figured chickadee.

Upon closer inspection, it was a Downy Woodpecker, and it was cleaning out the nest box.

I am told that it is not uncommon for Downies to over-winter in these boxes.

This one is located near a suet box, so it might be considered prime real estate.
