On Sunday, I traveled from the Celery Farm to Slabsides, the cabin in West Park, N.Y., where the great naturalist John Burroughs did much of his writing and grew celery nearby.
At the Celery Farm, Stiles Thomas stopped draining the fields and they became Lake Appert. At Slabsides, the fields have reverted back to nature.
They show what an under-story might look like without all the deer-browsing.
