Don Torino’s Latest: Unnatural Fear of Nature

Don Torino's latest column for wildnewjersey.tv is about a troubling trend: uninformed folks are becoming more and more concerned about nature.
Here's a sample:
This past week on the evening news, residents of a small town in Bergen County were reported to be “Living in Fear” of a family of Coyotes that had the audacity to move into their suburban municipality.
“We are afraid to go out at night,” said a concerned citizen standing at their back door as a recording of howling coyotes played in the background like the soundtrack from a 1930’s Lon Chaney movie. “They even come and drink from my backyard pond.”
As scary as it sounds that a living creature may want a drink of water now and then, there were no helpful comments from wildlife experts in the piece about coexisting with coyotes — or any other wildlife for that matter.
Nor was there supportive tips such as how to protect pets and especially no comments stating that Coyotes don’t tend to dine on the good citizens of Bergen County.

A well written piece with a very important message. Too bad the national media doesn’t pick up news items like this!
