Cuban Owl Moth

DSCN9868-004

I have a lot of cool pix from my recent trip to Cuba, so thought I'd share them here.

With the help of some knowledgeable moth friends, I have been able to ID this moth as an Owl Moth (Thysania zenobia, for any ancient Romans out there).

The moth was photographed at my lodgings in Playa Larga, not far from the Bay of Pigs.

Tomorrow: Malachite Butterfly.

  • The shape is so interesting…such symmetry. Those browns almost look like the pattern that camouflaged fatigues would have…you know that tactical cargo army fatigue type of look. I think they are combat uniforms. I suppose it looks bark-like also. What trees are around that area that you found it in? If there are palm trees there it would make sense.

  • Bark moth ?
