Fulfilling a Promise from Post Office Bay
When Patty and I went to the Galapagos last summer, we made a stop at the legendary Post Office Bay, where whalers used to drop their mail for back home into a barrel, to be delivered by the next ship headed home.
Post Office Bay, located on Floreana Island, is still in operation. Read more about it here.
Visitors are encouraged to drop off postcards there (no stamp needed) and to sort through the postcards already there for locales near them back home (right).
We grabbed a few postcards addressed to folks from our region and our daughter's place in Washington, D.C., figuring we'd be able to drop them off sooner or later.
This past weekend, we dropped off the Washington postcard — alas no one came to the door. Would have been fun to see how long ago the letter had been "mailed" at Post Office Bay."
