Allendale Bear Pix

STC_0486-001
As promised, here are the trail cam pix of a Black Bear that came back to a feeder to get the last dregs of suet in Allendale last night.

The night before, the bear had knocked down two feeders. No more leaving feeders out at night for me!

For more information on why leaving your feeders up at night is a horrible idea if bears have been seen recently in your area, click here.

Hi Loren – Great post. May I copy into the Celery Facebook page as part of an alert?
    Thanks,
    Gaby

  • Thanks for sharing your advice…

  • Bring your feeders in until it is cold enough for the bears to be inactive, don’t even put them out during the day. Bears are not nocturnal. They have been in my yard at all times of the day and night (I live on the Ramapo River in Oakland, they have been a way of life here for years now). Those of you that have been visited by the bears at your feeders or at your garbage need to be aware that you are now more likely to have a bear in your yard and exercise caution, look before exiting your house and keep an eye out when you are in your yard. You have invited them for dinner and they think they are now welcome anytime. This also goes for the spring, they will be hungry when they come out and will remember where they found an easy meal.
The link provided says it is OK to feed between Dec 1 and April 1, from experience I would say let the weather be your guide more than the date. If the bears were inactive by Dec 1, the bear hunt would not be starting on Dec 4, would it? It isn’t safe to feed until it is actually cold.

  • You should be fine….

  • We love the farm, the past couple weeks we’ve be graced by finding the buck and fox and got pictures!

  • We saw the bags of garbage he brought into the woods, while we were walking through.

  • Yikes! Are we all safe during daylight hours?

  • You need to take your feeders in at night! Very important.

  • We have been having our feeders broken down just about every day now and my husband keeps going to the hardware store getting bigger and stronger chains plus I have heard strange noises. But nothing much would stop a bear like this. We get those big rectangular seed and fruit seed cylinders that go for about 4 dollars each and each night they have been gone…the whole cylinder.
