While we were in Bayou Country, we just had to visit Avery Island, home of a huge Snowy Egret rookery and the Tabasco factory. The rookery is part of Jungles Gardens.
One of the highlights was up-close looks at this young Roseate Spoonbill. According to a local legend that I just made up, the Spoonbills get rosier as they eat more Tabasco sauce.
Other highlights were a young Little Blue that reminded me of a ballet dancer when he landed. migrating warblers, including an Ovenbird, and of course the rookery, which was totally devoid of birds off-season. Obligatory gator, too.
