Weekend miscellany: Part Three

   Deer

Our backyard had an uninvited guest this weekend — a white-tailed deer.

Sorry to say, the deer is not my favorite animal these days because of its close association with deer ticks and Lyme disease, its appetite for forests’ under-stories, and its inability to avoid automobiles.

The Celery Farm’s deer population is not as large as it once was — perhaps because of coyotes.

Nonetheless, when I see a deer these days, I don’t  think "neat animal."

I think: "Be sure to wear insect spray when you go to the Celery Farm."

  • Oh no!
“Killing deer to eradicate Lyme disease is comparable to killing humans to eradicate E. coli.”

  • It seems like the population may be growing. So far, in the past few weeks, I’ve seen a mini-herd of 4 (3 does and a buck)in the Green Way meadow and another big buck near the butterfly garden.
