Uncommon butterfly — plus!
While the saltmarsh sharp-tailed sparrow was furtively darting through the wildflowers near the northern entrance to the Celery Farm, over at the butterfly garden a male and female sachem butterfly were serenely flitting around in the sunshine — even with a third grade class (below) from the Tisdale School in Ramsey watching nearby.
These butterflies are fairly common as far north as Somerset County, but they are still unusual this far north.
In the background, a peck’s skipper (below) was working the butterfly bush as well.
A small grasshopper (also below) was hanging out, too.
Meanwhile, a monarch, an orange sulphur and a dragonfly (yep, yep, yep, below) were working the wildflower garden not far from the sparrow.
Call it Bugfest 2007.
Help with the dragonfly ID would be most welcome 🙂

Wowie! You’re getting some great photos! The doggone fly — sorry, dragonfly — is a female Common Whitetail, I believe. The males have been flitting and sitting all over the Farm the last couple of months.
