Turtle eggs take a beating

Yesterday morning our front yard looked a bit like the Little Big Horn after Sitting Bull and his men attacked the Seventh Cavalry.

There were at least 50 snapping turtle eggs destroyed and laying there like melted Ping Pong balls.

I think that snapping turtles manage to thrive by collectively laying hundreds and hundreds of eggs near the Celery Farm in hopes that the raccoons and skunks and other predators will miss a few.

By the way, moments after I photographed the egg shell massacre, another snapping turtle was nearby, laying more eggs.

Here she is, heading for the egg maternity ward.
