The lay of the land

One of the neat things about a blog is that you can post plenty of pictures.

I thought I would post one today of the view beyond my backyard, so you can get a lay of the land and get a better picture in your mind’s eye of the happenings there.

My idea is to post the photo, the take another photo from the same vantage point every month or two and post them together, just to note how the seasons are changing.

The photo below is the axis of action, such as it is, in the world beyond my window.

Img_6684_1 A copper-topped feeder and a suet cake are on the pole in the foreground.

The little white box to the left of the feeder is a nesting box that has attracted a few house-hunters already this spring. In years past, it has attracted a chickadee or two, but typically the house sparrows move in.

Slightly above the little white box is a wood-duck nesting box. That’s where the female screech owl was hanging out five days ago, but we have not seen her since.

In the back of the photo, parallel to the shoreline of the lake, is Ace’s nesting box.

Ace is home right now, trying to stay warm. Img_6688_3

Who can blame him on this overcast Saturday in mid-March?

One confession, and a caveat for all part-time photographers: Last Monday I took a photo similar to the one at the top of this entry, with one major difference. In the earlier photo, both Ace and the new owl could be seen sticking their heads out of their boxes.

The only trouble was, I didn’t have a memory card in the camera.

Lesson of the day: Never forget your memory!
