The big thaw
For a lake that has been frozen for a couple of months, the lake behind my house sure didn’t take very long to melt.
A small opening in the ice on Monday became a gap on Tuesday morning.
When I left for work yesterday morning, half the lake had thawed. A wood-duck nesting box, surrounded by ice the day before, was near the edge of the ice.
By the time I got home, open water was everywhere.
The good news is that because of all the open water, ducks are returning to the lake in droves.
The bad news is that Canada geese are returning as well.
What’s not to like about the geese? They’re bad neighbors. They quarrel and party most at night, and trash everyone’s lawns during the day.
