THANK YOU … for a Great Clean-Up
The Celery Farm Clean-Up this weekend was a big success, with more than two dozen volunteers pulling all sorts of litter and detritus from the underbrush and from out of the stream.
Great job! As Carol Flanagan, president of the volunteer group that maintains the Celery Farm, said at the end of the work detail: "Thank you to all who volunteered at the Celery Farm Clean-up today!
We've done our part to help keep this treasure clean and enjoyable for
all."
One team of three volunteers, for example, pulled out five garbage bags' worth of crud. Their haul included an empty bird-seed bag, a mostly empty bag of calcium chloride deicer, and countless bottles and cans and cups.
Also fished out of the waterway nearest the Franklin Turnpike — a dozen plastic bags of dog manure, most likely thrown down the storm drains of the roadway. Is there a way to heighten the public's awareness that storm drains empty into our streams and the Celery Farm?
Didn't intend to sound a sour note — just something to consider.
Again, great job. It takes a lot of work to keep this natural area looking natural.
Coming soon: What was the weirdest thing pulled out of the Celery Farm during the Clean-Up?
