Suet idea
Last summer, I heard (and wrote) about keeping the suet cake in it plastic case when you hang it in the suet feeder, then wiring the feeder so that it hangs upside down.
That way, the suet would still be available for nuthatches and woodpeckers but suet-hogs like grackles would have a tough time. http://www.typepad.com/t/app/weblog/post?__mode=edit_entry&id=36874340&blog_id=1241906
But hanging the suet cake upside-down had a huge downside. In hot weather it dripped.
So I started hanging it upside-up. The little birds still eat from it.
It doesn’t drip in warm weather.
The grackles haven’t been back.
And in the autumn, you get to take artsy shots of fallen leaves clinging to the suet feeder.
