Stepping up for Lorrimer…
The redoubtable (first or second definition*) John Workman writes:
This is the time of year that the Fyke Nature Association (which helps maintain the Celery Farm) raises money for Lorrimer
Sanctuary, "our" nearby New Jersey Audubon Center in Franklin Lakes.
The method of raising funds is simple. Teams of Fyke members
scour the trees, bushes and waters of the Celery Farm from morning to
night this Saturday, May 15, counting the number of bird species they
find. (The total is usually between 60 and 80
species).
Details follow.
People are asked to pledge a certain amount for every species
found. This amount is usually anywhere from ten cents to
two dollars per bird. So, for example, if you pledge 50 cents a
species, and the team finds 70 different types of birds, your pledge comes
to …… (insert sound of my super-dee-dooper computer crunching the
numbers here) ….. $35.
