Squirrel-proof Feeders

Squirrel jw-2 The mail just keeps coming on my recent column on squirrel feeders. I have apparently given "spring-type" feeders. A lot of readers swear by them.

Writes one reader:  "We're surprised that you gave such a brief "nod" to the bird feeder that works by adjusting tension. They work very well, though not very attractive.

"We'd tried all other suggestions and nothing worked until we got the spring-type feeder."

I am glad these feeders work, and I recommend them if they are your thing. But as I said in the original column: "… most of these feeders are ingenious but complicated contraptions. I have never been a big fan of contraptions — even if they have beguiling names like 'Twirl-a-Squirrel,' 'Fortress' and 'Yankee Flipper.' "

But that's just me. And I do appreciate the feedback — there's no right or wrong answer.

Tomorrow: A threatening note from the Squirrelly Liberation Front.

  • even the spring type ones loose there effectiveness when the snow reaches the bottom of the feeder, this winter the squirrels just sat in the snow and ate from what become a feeding trough.
