Something Awesome Is In the Air
I recently got word that Allendale's mayor and council are going to proclaim the red-shouldered hawk as the borough's official honorary bird in recognition of the raptor's storied history here.
The red-shoulder, which is listed as endangered when nesting in New Jersey, has bred successfully for more than two decades in Allendale, often changing nest locations every few years.
The mayor and council will read the proclamation at the beginning of their meeting at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18.
Please attend the beginning of the meeting to show your support. Borough Hall is at 500 W. Crescent Ave.
You can download the free e-book I did about Allendale's Red-shoulders (it features an interview with the late great Stiles Thomas, who championed this raptor for decades). The link is included in a blog post I wrote when the ebook came out:

You can also borrow a hard copy of the book at Allendale's Lee Memorial Library.
(Thank you, Mayor Wilczynski and the Allendale Borough Council!)
