The Record has a story of mine today on hearty volunteers who act as crossing guards for salamanders and frogs and toads on rainy spring nights when the love-starved little critters leave their upland homes to breed in vernal pools.

   Note that Bergen County has no such efforts yet, for a lack of volunteers.
