Rob Fanning’s Celery Farm Report

Some people call today March 1st. I have another name for it–Bird Spring…

By this time of year–Red-winged Blackbirds and grackles are back
in force, Amercian Woodcocks are already displaying, and the songs of
Titmice, House Finches, Cardinals, and the like are ringing
throughout hedgerows, woodlots, and suburban yards.
With Bird Spring
also comes the thawing of many local ponds and lakes, including the
Celery Farm.
Today was indeed a ducky day at the farm–with highlights
being a dozen WOOD DUCKS, 7 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 5 HOODED MERGANSERS, 2
pairs of GREEN-WINGED TEAL, and a single drake RUDDY DUCK (still in
winter garb–but not for long)
Another nice duck sighting today were a flock of 8 COMMON
MERGANSERS flying over my yard–which may just be a new yard for me for.
Be sure to check your local ponds, lakes, and rivers, and fields
(geese anyone?!) as waterfowl of all sorts are winging their way north
every day now. Full CF list below…

and Happy Bird Spring everyone… (Thanks, Rob!)
