Allendale Red-shoulder Book!

Stiles, hawk
Jerry Barrack and I have been working hard on the coffee-table book on the endangered Red-shouldered Hawks of Allendale. The book will be a small coffee-table book, 8 by 10, approx. 70 pages, full color throughout.

HAWK, RS YOUNG 6511DSC_0175_cropJerry was the principal photographer, and we also have great shots by Kevin Watson, Kumar Patel, Barbara Dilger, Bob and Lisa Safier, and Ken Wiegand.

I did most of the writing, with additional brief chapters by John Workman (on the Red-shoulders' courting display) and Ken Wiegand (on what it's like to host a Red-shoulder nest). Len Soucy of The Raptor Trust wrote the Foreword.

We also used Stiles Thomas' 10 years of notes on the Red-shoulders' triumphs and tragedies.

The book will include: Amazing photography (including a sequence of this year's fledgling, Manfred, growing up), the 10 years of Allendale Red-shoulders (including nest sites and a locator map), an interview with Stiles, a reprinting of a chapter on Red-shoulders from an excellent 1898 birding book, and several nifty surprises.

We are publishing the book through Blurb because the book is by nature a specialized audience and a limited press run. We expect to have sample  hard-cover and soft-cover versions ready in a week, Blurb willing — in plenty of time for the holiday season.

We will sell the book at whatever it costs to print it — think of it as Jerry and Jim's folly/labor of love.

We expect the soft-cover to sell for under $30 and the hard cover for under $40.

  • I’m eagerly awaiting the release of your book. But can you tell me what “Blurb” is?
