Part 1: Eastern Box Turtle Laying Eggs

DSCN9843
Got a call the other night from someone whose backyard was being used an Eastern Box Turtle nursery.

Photos of same are posted here. Eastern Box Turtles are species of Special Concern in New Jersey. How to protect the eggs?

After some quick research, it was determined that after the turtle finished, the homeowner should spray the area with water to cut down the scent in hopes of discouraging foxes and skunks from looking for the eggs. Which she did. (What a great and caring homeowner!)

More on Eastern Box Turtles in New Jersey here.

To be continued…
