OWL: Naming Mrs. Ace
Several friends of this blog have asked me to give Mrs. Ace a name, or to hold a contest to that end.
This being April Fool’s Day, I say let the nominations begin.
You may be chagrined to hear that one early bird has already come up with a great name: Winnie, the perfect description of her voice.
Me, I am not big on naming wild critters. "Ace" is short for the Latin word for owl, Asio. I named the male owl "Ace" because it is simpler than calling him the male screech owl in every post.
I call his mate "Mrs. Ace" because she arrived on the scene later last spring, and I needed an easy way to differentiate between the male and female, and get across that they were a pair.
So fire away. If anybody has a better name than Winnie or Mrs. Ace, let’s hear it! Nominations ends Friday.
In the meantime, welcome to April. 🙂

If the male owl has a name, if only to make him easier to discuss, the female deserves one too. Good luck with the contest, thank you for the wonderful website, and all that you do to promote and protect nature.
I’m gonna go with my mother-in-law’s (Sally T.) scientific suggestion, Carolus Linnaeus, or Carol.
May the best name win… -
I love Winnie but I’m submitting Grace Ace. What a fascinating video diary.

Hi,
I am a special education teacher/reading specialist and was using your site for some high interest reading material for my students. One of my students thought the name should be Grandma Ace because Mrs. Ace has had more than 1 clutch of eggs. Another young man thought Mother Ace would be more appropriate. Most of my students feel Winnie is the best so far. Thanks for the great material!

In keeping with the card theme, albeit unintentional, how about Queen or Queenie?

Jim,Wonderful to see everything is going well with the Aces,We have a couple of Blue tits nesting in our garden no web cam I,m afraid just a brownie box camera, but back to the competion Sally T,s name was really well thought out, just one thing wrong Carolus is latin for Charles. Now on the other hand shk is on the right track but I,m keeping an ace up my sleeve and coming up with Diamond Lil I know you will love it. keep up the good work

or, you can simply name her “spades” since we all recognize how risky their venture can be!

ok I read that the Eastern Screech Owl was first described by Carolus Linnaeus.
So, in keeping with the origin of your naming hubby ACE (Asio), how about Carolus Ace?
