New Art Exhibition at the Blauvelt
One of my favorite indoor places to visit in this area is the Blauvelt Nature Art Museum in Oradell — especially when it is displaying a new exhibit.
Now through the end of December, the museum is hosting the
Society of Animal Artists 52nd Annual Exhibition, and what a show.
These top-notch international artists work
in a variety of media to portray amazing creatures from around the globe — from North Carolinian Tucker Bailey's bronze of a Red Fox to Australian Lyn Ellison's oil painting of an Azure Kingfisher.
Birds are especially well-represented in the show, including many local favorites: Red-bellied Woodpecker, American Kestrel, Eastern Bluebird, Blue Jay and Great Horned Owlets.
The museum is beautiful and admission is free. The works of art in this exhibit are breath-taking. That this museum is typically not crowded when I have visited is insane.
More photos and information follow.
The exhibit features some big-name artists — from Guy Cohleach to John Banfield, and many of the pieces are for sale. (Talk about the ultimate holiday gift shopping!) A catalog of the exhibit is available for $20, and allows you to enjoy the paintings, drawings and sculptures long after you've left.
The museum's website is here.
The museum's hours are here.
According to the museum, "The Society of Animal Artists is devoted to promoting excellence in the artistic
portrayal of the creatures sharing our planet, and to the education of the public
through informative art seminars, lectures and teaching demonstrations."
Please check out this amazing art museum. I try to promote it when I can, and they were kind enough to lend me a few Passenger Pigeon specimens for a screening of a documentary on extinct birds.
