My Column: House WrenFest
My column in The Record today is about our amazing and boisterous neighbors, the House Wrens.
Here's the beginning:
Late last month, a bachelor moved into the neighborhood, and it was quite a shock.
He started yakking at 5 in the morning, hoping to attract a girlfriend. And never shut up.
My wife and I knew who the guy was: a house wren, nature’s chatterbox. His sputtering calls were so loud we thought he had taken up residence under our open bedroom window, but he was calling from all over our backyard
Sure enough, he attracted a girlfriend. They soon set up housekeeping in one of our nest boxes and took turns singing their bubbly refrains.
