My ‘Bird Watcher’ Column This Week
My birding column for the Record and Herald News is on the Common (but mysterious) Nighthawk, which has already been showing up in our area.

This article was perfectly timed! I saw 3 fly over Ridge Road in Lyndhurst around 6pm, and as suggested in your article, emailed Kristin Mylecraine. A few hours later, just after sunset, I had another fly over my house, also in Lyndhurst. Reports are coming in over JerseyBirds as well… Guess this is nighthawk primetime!
Appropriately enough, my first nighthawks were at Celery Farm about two years ago. -
Another nice alternate Thursday morning surprise! I would have been taken as a (goat)sucker if I had missed it. And Mr. Fanning’s report of 3 nighthawks “coursing over the lake” in early afternoon supports the fact that they don’t fly only at night (or even only at dawn and dusk).
Thanks for another informative piece.
