Here's another taxidermied mystery from NJ Audubon's Lorrimer Sanctuary.
What is it, and why is it unusual?
Several folks answered correctly. It is a Passenger Pigeon, which went extinct a century ago. Lorrimer is having it professionally restored by one of the best in the business. Pretty cool.
In the meantime, if you want to see some Passenger Pigeons, visit the American Museum of Natural History, where you can see a huge display, below.
(Check your local library for free museum passes. I know that Allendale's Lee Memorial Library offers them to the AMNH and many other great museums.)
