Monday Morning Mystery: 3 Dragonflies

One of my favorite spots to walk is in the Clove at High Mountain, and summer is always a good time to see dragonflies there.

Can you identify these three?

  • 1st is an immature male Eastern Pondhawk. Right now has Mom’s green color, but will transition to Dad’s blue.
2nd is mature male Great Blue Skimmer.
3rd is an immature male Common Whitetail. Has Dad’s wing markings, but abdomen is brown like Mom’s. It will also eventually transition to white abdomen like Dad’s.

1st is a female pondhawk my favorite. I believe 2nd is the male pondhawk and 3rd a female common whitetail?
