RED LETTER DAY

After a really good day of birding, I hear a lot of folks say that it was "a red-letter day."

What does it mean, and where did it come from? (Try not to Google it…)

Obviously a day when one sees all the red birds: Red-bellied Woodpecker, Red-headed Woodpecker, Redstart, Red Knot, Red Crossbill, Red-eyed Vireo, Red-necked Grebe, Red-footed Booby, Red- shafted Flicker, Red-winged Blackbird, and as called by JB, the Robin Red Breast!
