Monday Morning Mystery 052520
I know this is a gruesome mystery, so my apologies.
I saw this dead mammal on the shoulder of Franklin Tpke near the CF.
It looked big for a mouse or even a chipmunk.
Anybody know that it is? Was?

I was going to guess flying squirrel too. I’d never heard of one until recently when a friend here in Allendale had them getting inside their house.

i… i think that’s a flying squirrel. basing this on the ears, the dark edges of the eyes, and the tail having a flattened appearance. also, the skin does look pretty loose along the flanks.
i could be wrong! i’ve never seen one. i think southern flying squirrel would be the more likely of the two, although new jersey does have both, apparently.
