Mystery flower

   Saw this on a walk in a natural area in Ramsey. What is it?

  • There is a de-flowered tulip tree somewhere nearby.

  • To be more specific, it’s the remains of the tuliptree fruit, most of its samara-like seeds having been dispersed, leaving the central axis exposed.

  • Liriodendron tulipifera. Aah, one of my favorite scientific names!
