Feather May 2020(1)A "Bird Watcher" reader writes:

Would you be able to assist in possibly identifying the attached picture of a feather?

I live on the border to northwest Morris County and Sussex County adjacent to Bowling Green Mountain and Mahlon Dickenson Reservation.  Lots of raptors and owls.

My granddaughter  (aged 2 12) found it and wanted me to show her which bird it came from. She loves birds.

I'm thinking some sort of hawk. What do you think?

  • Thanks Diane. It’s close between the sharp shinned, goshawk and coopers. There are two that are up in the pines and tall trees by me. They make a lot of noise calling back and forth and following each other. I’ll have to get a closer look and find out some of the calls that the they make so I can see which pair it is. I’ll also look up to see which is the most common up here. Jim.
