INCREDIBLE ONLINE FALCON DRAMA

The intruder with the fve eggs

It was the best of timing, it was the worst of timing.

For today’s “Bird Watcher” column in The Record, I chose to write about watching peregrines online. Featured are the pair of falcons nesting atop the Union County Courthouse in Elizabeth, which at last count had been incubating five eggs.

Much has transpired after I filed the column last week. Basically, an unbanded female peregrine intruder invaded the nest site four days ago, started incubating the eggs, tangled with the nesting pair, injured herself but still managed to commandeer the nest site.

Things have been up in the air ever since.

At this point, what will happen next is a matter of speculation. Because of the fracas, the eggs were left unattended for several hours yesterday, and that’s not good. Stay tuned.

You can watch Conserve Wildlife Foundation’s top livestream of the nest on YouTube – and comments and updates from its ardent followers – here:

To see some of the action between the intruders and the nesting pair from two evenings ago, watch this video recorded by Sylvia’s Raptor Cam Video Clips (Sylvia has other recent clips from the nest as well on her YouTube page):
