Feathering a nest
As I keep track of Ace’s comings and goings with the screech-cam, I have noticed not just the increasing number of feathers in the box but also Ace’s seeming ability to arrange them.
As the days have grown warmer, the nesting box has apparently expanded a little, and there are now small gaps between the door to the box and the box itself.
And Ace apparently doesn’t like them. Besides feathering the bottom of the nesting box, Ace has been pushing feathers into the gaps around the door frame.
You can’t see it from outside the box yet, and I hadn’t noticed the door feathers until later in the spring in years past.
Do you have any theories on Ace’s need to caulk the openings with feathers (seen in the upper corners of the photo)? Is it for insulation? Or to cut down on unwanted insect traffic in coming weeks?
