Don Torino’s Latest Column: Fall Flowers
Don Torino, a friend of this blog, has a nifty column this week on the wildnewjersey.tv blog — about the change of seasons.
Here's a sampling:
"My favorite reassurance of
the changing of seasons is the last flowers of fall. The beautiful
Asters, Goldenrods, and Snakeroots remind me what a beautiful summer it
has been.
"Despite summer coming to an end, everything is as it should be
and they will eventually help bring about the wildlife of spring. They
bring a calm to me: a kind of leap of faith that tells me — despite the
surrounding New Jersey traffic, urban sprawl, and disappearing
habitat — that nature will go on.
"The seasons will change; fall
will bring magnificent colors to the Earth and eventually the snows of
winter. And when it seems like it will never come, spring arrives to
renew everything again.
"Nature is the one thing we can depend on no
matter what, some of us may just let it go by without a glance but to
those of us who let it in it will refresh our souls forever, as do the
last flowers of fall."
