CELERY FARM: Purple martins

Do you know those white gourd-like nesting boxes in the field near the Butterfly Garden?
They are purple martin boxes, and ace birder Fred Weber has been diligently getting up early in the morning, going to the field and playing tapes of purple martin calls to lure these unusual swallows.
Yesterday, for the first time, Fred saw purple martins inspecting the boxes.
House-hunting for next year? We shall see, but very encouraging.
    Congratulations and thanks, Fred.
    More on purple martins here.

  • I admire Fred’s tenacity, as this is not the first year he has been at this. We need to get him a Purple Martin hat!

  • We had quite a few of them visiting the feeder this spring in Mahwah. Haven’t seen them lately, though.

    That’s great! Thanks Fred!
