Celery Farm Poison Ivy: You Can Help!
The Celery Farm once again has a bumper crop of Poison Ivy, and we need your help!
Next Saturday, July 14, friends of the Celery Farm are launching a Poison Ivy blitz. We are asking volunteers from 10 to 10:30 a.m., to help pull the Poison Ivy that has grown along the trail's edge. A lot of folks — especially children — just don't realize it's there.
You'll need to wear gloves, long sleeves, long pants, socks and shoes. Bring clippers and trashbag. We'll meet at the Franklin Turnike parking lot and Green Way at 10 a.m., attack the weeds for half-hour and then go home and shower…
Please e-mail Jim Wright at celeryfarm (at) gmail.com if you can help.
In the meantime, it is best to stay in the middle of the trails and be mindful of where you step and what you touch. If you don't know what a plant or vine is, don't touch it. Vine above, for example, is Poison Ivy.
If you think you've come in contact with Poison Ivy, wash the affected area immediately. One friend says: "I suggest DAWN dishwashing liquid as it cuts through the oils of the poison ivy very effectively. If you think you've been exposed, jump in the shower with the dish detergent and scrub away!"
If you have Poison Ivy, I have found Zanfel to be an effective countermeasure — though expensive.
As always, feel free to comment…
