Fred Weber reports:
Almost 3 hrs. of looking today (July 18) at the Greenway meadows at various times produced only 8 species, compared to 11 yesterday in half the time. Tiger Swallowtail, Cabbage White 3, Red Admiral 2, Monarch 2, Silver-spotted Skipper 10, Peck’s Skipper 4, Northern Broken Dash, and Little Glassywing. 9 or 10 Humminbird Clearwing Moths. I’d help with the walk Sat. but I’ll be at a family gathering in Vermont. -

Monday, 4 – 4:30 p.m.
Saw black swallowtail (Pipevine?)
Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Butterfly Garden)
Summer Azure (on path)
Likely Red Admiral (Parnell’s Path)
Silver Spotted Skipper and Hummingbird Clear-winged Moth (Green Way field). -
Sunday, July 15, 4 p.m. 2 Monarchs in field east of Phairs Pond, Red Admiral along Parnell’s Path, Silver Spotted Skipper along the Green Way field path.
(Also had Monarch, Eastern Tiger Swallowtail and black swallowtail species in my backyard, abutting Celery Farm on Franklin Tunrpike. -
On Saturday, July 14, I was there early in the day and I had
Silver-Spotted Skipper (on the monarda)
Monarch (on milkweed)
Cabbage White (flitting around)
Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (in the smaller meadow near the swamp milkweed)
On an other-notable-insects note, I also had my first Ebony Jewelwings of the year in the woods near the recently-fixed bridge, and heard my first cicadas of the year.
I am sure my butterfly tally would have been higher if I’d been in the meadow past 9am, but I was already gone. -
Reported by Fred Weber: I butterflied the 2 Green Way meadows for about an hour and a half and had very little on Wednesday. 7/11/18 Tiger Swallowtail 1 Cabbage White 2 Red Admiral 1 Monarch 1 Silver spotted Skipper 2 Delaware Skipper 1 Peck’s Skipper 2 Northern Broken Dash 1 Over all it’s a bad year. All the storms in late winter with a few hot days mixed in may be a factor. The Wild Bergamot is nearing peak flowering and there’s still plenty of Milkweed. The Mtn. Mint is just starting to flower. The Monarch today was on Swamp Milkweed in the back meadow, which will be flowering longer than the Common Milkweed. So the next few weeks will be prime butterfly time. I hope to check out the meadows frequently and see what shows up. Fred Weber
