Bug of the week
My wife spotted this bug while she and I were walking in the Celery Farm the other day. What is it? (Answer appears later.)
I bring this up for two reasons.
1. This long Labor Day Weekend is a great time to visit the Celery Farm and look around.
2. You’ll not only see the usual suspects (herons and egrets and geese) but — if you look closely — you might see nifty critters like this guy.
What is this bug?
It is a caterpillar — a Pandorus sphinx moth caterpillar. Thanks to Deedee Burnside, a friend of this blog, for the ID.
I don’t know about you, but anytime I can use a word like "sphinx," I figure I am getting somewhere, and any bug with that word in its name is automatically cool in my book. These guys grow up to be hummingbird moths, or something similar.
