Thanks! I took a stab at the prey ID in your follow up post.

  • Wow. You have an eye for detail.
I photographed the Peregrine at State Line Hawk Watch in Alpine on Sunday.

  • Cool picture of a song bird in the talons ….

Peregrine Falcon with a bird prey in its talons. The Peregrine has an all dark head instead of the typical sideburns seen on Peregrines in NJ, so ? Peale’s race originating from Pacific Northwest vs. (descendent) of reintroduced bird. Where was this photo taken?

  • Pat Price

I just don’t think this is an osprey. Maybe a compilation of different bird attributes? A fake bird? I see 4 feet, none are the shape of an osprey’s talons, a badly proportioned body for an osprey, a wingspan not long enough, and aren’t they white underneath?

  • Karen says…
I believe it has too many legs so it must be carrying..a catch.

  • Steven Noel Roth

That’s what it looks like to me.

  • Michael Pollock

That is a big, bad falcon but I assume the mystery has to do with whatever is in, or on, its belly, and that I don’t have a clue. Will be interested if you or someone can explain.

  • Tom Pollard

Those aren’t an osprey’s talons. Is it carrying a small bird, tucked close to its body.
