Backyard Bat Report 061110

For the second time this year, I sat in a lawn chair in my driveway at dusk last night and looked for bats. For the second time, I saw no bats. I have not even seen any flying around, although I am happy to report that others have seen bats flying.

The first year I did a bat survey at this site, I had well over 100 bats.

The second year, the number dropped a bit.  The third and fourth years, I counted 39. Lats year, I counted zero — at four sites.

If you know of any bat roosts in North Jersey, let me know and I will do a bat survey or help you with one of your own.

Last year there seemed to be no bats up by us in Montvale. This past week while walking up the driveway, we saw at least 3 bats at dusk. I made my husband give me his hat because they were flying so low. We will check further to see if they are consistent.

  • For the past few summers, I’ve usually seen 3 or 4 bats flying around my backyard at dusk just about every night. This year, I’m sorry to say that I’ve only seen one flying around (one night I saw two bats)and I’ve only seen them a handful of times. I have no idea where they roost.
